The best starting XI of 2024 January transfer window signings

Image
Clubs around Europe's biggest leagues have just had a month in which to do any necessary transfer business - in or out - that will see them right for the remainder of the season. The January window is famously poor when it comes to value and options. Plenty of clubs made use of the market, although there was a clear drop in spending as even elite footbal teams feel the pinch. Eric Dier's loan to Bayern Munich made big headlines, as much for the shock value as anything else, while striker Marcos Leonardo was an exciting capture for Benfica and has already made a prolific start in Portugal. Other likes Eljif Elmas (RB Leipzig), Cyril Ngonge (Napoli), Orel Mangala (Lyon) and Renan Lodi (Al Hilal) moved for the big money. There were also notable loans for Kalvin Phillips (West Ham) and Armando Broja (Fulham), but they don't make the best possible XI of January signings... Thomas Kaminski - Luton Town Kaminski has been very busy / Michael Regan/GettyImages Certainly not a big name, but one that has proved crucial to Luton Town so far. Ahead of their first season in the Premier League, the Hatters hierarchy knew that every signing they made needed to land. After not retaining Ethan Horvath on the way up, Luton had to sign a first-choice goalkeeper and Thomas Kaminski, arriving for £2.5m from Blackburn Rovers, has been a great pick-up...

Best signings of the 2023/24 Premier League - ranked

Latter-day Maurizio Sarri has evolved into the grumpy idealogue of the footballing world. "All this transfer talk does my head in, there’s nothing more dull than that," the former Napoli and Chelsea manager sniffed while in charge of Lazio. But based on the unrelenting churn of the rumour mill, it appears that sulky Sarri is in the minority. The excitement of endless possibilities conjured during the transfer window outstrips the underwhelming reality of the regular season for many fans - only a handful of clubs harbour any realistic hopes of winning a trophy, and even fewer actually lift any silverware. However, every club has the chance to make a clever addition in the off-season. Here are some of the best snapped up by the Premier League this summer.
