Nottingham Forest 0-1 Liverpool: Player ratings as Nunez snatches victory in stoppage time

Image
Darwin Nunez salvaged a dramatic 1-0 victory for Liverpool with a 99th-minute winner away to Nottingham Forest on Saturday afternoon. Nuno Espirito Santo's stubborn side frustrated Liverpool throughout normal time. After consecutive cup victories with an ever-shrinking group of healthy players across the previous six days, Jurgen Klopp's 'mentality monsters' threatened to be muzzled until Nunez emerged as their saviour. The Uruguayan had been denied from point-blank range by Matz Sels moments earlier but left Forest's goalkeeper rooted to the spot with a deft header at the death. How the game unfolded Anthony Elanga broke clear of Liverpool's characteristically high backline but was thwarted by Caoimhin Kelleher's left boot in the biggest chance of a tepid first half. The flag may have come to Liverpool's rescue if their goalkeeper hadn't but it underscored Forest's preferred route to goal. Jurgen Klopp avoided any references to Robin Hood ahea...

Liverpool 3-1 Burnley: Player ratings as Reds return to Premier League summit

Image
Liverpool returned to the top of the Premier League table with a 3-1 victory over Burnley on Saturday afternoon. Despite a promising start from the visitors, Liverpool grabbed the opening goal of the Game after Diogo Jota headed home a corner from the right-hand side. However, the Clarets did find an equaliser just before the break, Dara O'Shea producing a fine header himself from a corner at the other end. Diaz then put Liverpool back in front seven minutes after the break and despite a few scares, the Reds secured victory late on through Darwin Nunez's header. How the game unfolded With Manchester City having beaten Everton in the day's early kick-off, there was even greater pressure on Liverpool to secure all three points against Burnley. The Clarets found themselves seven points off safety before kick-off having only shown glimpses of their quality this season, but were aiming to cause an upset at Anfield. Vincent Kompany's side made a confident start on Merseyside...

Newcastle 4-4 Luton: Player ratings as Magpies come from behind in eight-goal epic

Image
Newcastle United duked out a breathless 4-4 draw at home to Luton Town on Saturday afternoon. It was a jab-jab thrust-thrust bout where each blow landed on their opponent's glass chin. Playground kick-abouts have exerted more defensive discipline. Luton twice fell behind to a pair of Sean Longstaff goals in the first half but roared back each to go in level at the break. Shortly after the hour mark, Luton found themselves with a 4-2 lead. Kieran Trippier halved the deficit before the returning Harvey Barnes fired Newcastle level with 17 minutes of normal time still to play. Both sides had chances to snatch all three points but the spoils, eventually, would be shared. How the game unfolded Longstaff needed less than seven minutes to crank up the volume on Tyneside, crashing into the box to drill Trippier's cutback into the bottom corner. The visitors didn't wilt in the face of Newcastle's commanding start. Gabriel Osho swiftly equalised for Luton midway through the first...

Fulham 2-1 Arsenal: Player ratings as Gunners miss chance to end 2023 on top

Image
Arsenal's winless run stretched to three Game s as Fulham deservedly edged an entertaining London derby at Craven Cottage on Sunday afternoon. Bukayo Saka was on hand to open the scoring in just the fifth minute, but the hosts responded well and levelled matters through Raul Jimenez. The Gunners couldn't raise their game and some haphazard defending allowed Bobby De Cordova-Reid to slam home the winner in the 59th minute. How the game unfolded Arsenal began with killer intent and were ahead after five minutes as they hit their hosts on the counter attack. Gabriel Martinelli scrambled up-field and drifted into the box before his shot was palmed into the path of Saka. The England forward was just onside and reacted quickest to loop the ball over Bernd Leno and into the net. However, the early vibrancy from the visitors somewhat died off as Fulham worked their way back into the contest. Jimenez brought David Raya into meaningful action for the first time with a stinging drive from...

Chelsea 2-1 Crystal Palace: Player ratings as late Madueke penalty settles London derby

Image
Chelsea bounced back from their Christmas Eve humbling by beating Crystal Palace 2-1 at Stamford Bridge on Wednesday night. Mauricio Pochettino named the Blues' youngest ever starting lineup in the Premier League era and they looked far more assured of themselves on their return to home soil. The visiting Eagles put up a good fight but fell short at the last to ensure their miserable run against Chelsea continued. How the game unfolded The away end thought their side had taken a fifth-minute lead when Ebere Eze's low free-kick struck the side-netting, only realising seconds later the ball had gone the wrong side of the post. Surprise starter Ian Maatsen went close to breaking the deadlock after meeting a fine through ball from Mykhailo Mudryk, but Tyrick Mitchell retreated to clear the ball off the line in the nick of time. Soon after, Chelsea notched themselves ahead. Malo Gusto carried on a run over from right to left after some neat link-up play with Christopher Nkunku, cro...

Tottenham 2-1 Everton: Player ratings as Spurs squeeze back into top four

Image
FROM TOTTENHAM HOTSPUR STADIUM - Tottenham had to dig in deep to secure a 2-1 win at home to Everton on Saturday. Spurs have moved back into the Premier League 's top four with Manchester City away at the Club World Cup and are now only three points off the summit ahead of leaders Arsenal's trip to Liverpool. The visiting Toffees fought hard and were unlucky not to take a point, and they are now only four points clear of the relegation zone again. How the game unfolded With ten minutes on the clock, Tottenham took the lead. Pape Matar Sarr's clever pass between the lines picked out the run of Brennan Johnson, whose cutback was converted at the near post by former Everton favourite Richarlison. Spurs should have added a second soon after when Emerson Royal's cross found Johnson on the penalty spot, but he fired his half-volley over the top. Everton went close to finding an equaliser when Jarrad Branthwaite's pinpoint pass found Vitalii Mykolenko on the left wing. The...
