Ian Maatsen makes admission over Chelsea future

Image
Chelsea full-back Ian Maatsen has admitted he is keeping his "options open" amid interest from Manchester City. Maatsen returned to Chelsea during the summer following a hugely successful season on loan at Burnley, but has failed to become a regular under new manager Mauricio Pochettino at Stamford Bridge. The Dutch youth international has managed to rack up just 107 minutes of Premier League action during the 2023/24 season, and is yet to make a start in the league for the Blues. The full-back had been offered the chance to re-join newly-promoted Burnely on deadline day of the summer transfer window, with Chelsea agreeing a deal worth £31.5m to sell the player. However, Maatsen rejected the chance to team up with Vincent Kompany at Turf Moor again. Since then, Chelsea have been keen to tie the player down to a new contract in a bid to ensure he does not leave as a free agent once his current deal expires in June 2024. 90min recently reported that the Blues had triggered a ...

PGMOL chief reveals how referees will avoid Luis Diaz blunder in the future

Image
PGMOL chief refereeing officer Howard Webb has outlined the steps Premier League referees have taken to avoid a blunder similar to Luis Diaz's disallowed goal at Tottenham in the future. Diaz's clearly-onside effort in north London was chalked off due to a VAR blunder . Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp called for a replay while his club questioned the "sporting integrity" of the 2-1 defeat due to the mishap. PGMOL said the failure to award the goal was down to "significant human error" and the released audio confirmed an embarrassing communication breakdown between on-field referee Simon Hooper, VAR Darren England and AVAR Dan Cook. The game was goalless at the time of Diaz's goal. Curtis Jones had earlier been sent off before Son Heung-min and Cody Gakpo struck before half-time. Diogo Jota was then dismissed for two bookable offences in the second half as Joel Matip scored an own goal to seal the win for Spurs. Webb spoke about incident on Match Official...

Marquez "quite clear" on his MotoGP future decision

Image
With an end to Honda's current com Pet itive woes nowhere in sight, Marquez has done little to quell talk of a sensational switch to satellite Ducati machinery, which would entail ending his contract with the marque with which he has spent his entire premier-class career. After a disappointing first test with the 2024 prototype Honda at Misano, Marquez said he would make up his mind about his future "around India or Japan", referring to last weekend's inaugural Indian Grand Prix and this weekend's Japanese round at Motegi. Ahead of Honda's home race, Marquez remained tight-lipped about which direction he will go next season, only revealing that he has 'no doubts' about the best thing to do. "In my mind I am quite clear," stated Marquez when asked if he already had made up his mind about where he would be riding next season. "About the mental side, I don't have any doubts about myself, or what the b...

Marquez sets MotoGP future deadline as Honda problems ‘still the same’ with 2024 bike

Marquez has a contract with Honda for 2024 but speculation about him cutting ties with the Japanese manufacturer for next year have been rife amid its ongoing struggles in MotoGP this season. During the San Marino Grand Prix weekend, Marquez became embroiled in rumours that he will join Gresini Ducati next season. He repeatedly stated when asked that he has a contract for 2024, while both Honda and Gresini played down these rumours. Marquez got his first taste of the 2024 Honda prototype on Monday at the post-race Misano test, and was 17th at the end of session one and a second off the pace. Speaking to the media after Monday’s first session, Marquez said of the bike: “Yeah, of course it’s quite different riding style. But in the end the problems are more or less the same. So, we need to work more.” When asked if the problem remained a lack of rear grip, Marquez said “yes”, while later adding about the 2024 prototype: “Of course, it’s the first...
