Seattle's massive fault may result from oceanic crust 'unzipping itself' 55 million years ago

A hazardous fault line that runs south of downtown Seattle may have formed when the edge of the North American continent tore apart 55 million years ago, a new study suggests. Seattle sits atop the Cascadia Subduction Zone , where the Explorer, Juan de Fuca and Gorda tectonic plates slide beneath the much larger North American Plate. This eastward movement pulled a string of volcanic islands similar to present-day Iceland toward the continent and eventually caused a collision that's still visible in the bedrock beneath the city. New maps of this bedrock reveal the collision was extremely messy, with the northern half of the island chain riding the oceanic crust and slipping under the continent and the southern half piling onto the continent. Astronomers find an alien planet with a deep ocean that is ideal for supporting life

A team of astronomers has found an exoplanet in the Draco constellation that is 100 light years from Earth and its surface is submerged in a vast ocean. The exo planet , TOI-1452b, is a little bigger than Earth and is situated in a “Goldilocks zone,” which is a region where the temperature is just right for liquid water to exist. So, according to astronomers, TOI-1452b is expected to be covered in an ocean . The exoplanet orbits “a nearby visual-binary M dwarf” star. Dr. Charles Cadieux, a researcher at the University of Montreal, headed the multinational team that made the discovery; their work was published in the Astronomical Journal. According to Cadieux, TOI-1452b is one of the most promising candidates for an ocean planet that has been discovered so far. Its mass and radius point to a far lower density than one might anticipate for a planet like Earth, which is primarily composed of metal and rock. The scientists were made aware of the exoplanet...
