Image
Rebecca Welch is poised to become the first woman to referee a Premier League fixture after being assigned to Fulham's clash with Burnley on Saturday 23 December. The 40-year-old previously made EFL history after refereeing a game in April 2021 and took charge of a men's FA Cup fixture nine months later. She was also the fourth official for Manchester United's slender 1-0 win over Fulham in November - the first time the role had ever been taken on by a woman. Welch is set to referee the game between Fulham and Burnley at Craven Cottage two days before Christmas, breaking new ground for female officials across the country. Sam Allison's appointment as the referee for Sheffield United's Boxing Day clash with Luton Town is also significant because he'll be the first Black referee to take charge of a Premier League game since Uriah Rennie in 2008. He was appointed as a Championship referee after building up years of experience in the EFL. Sam Allison will become the...

His second appearance in the fixture came in April 2021 , as a late replacement for the injured Antonio Mateu Lahoz. PGMOL chief reveals how referees will avoid Luis Diaz blunder in the future

Image
PGMOL chief refereeing officer Howard Webb has outlined the steps Premier League referees have taken to avoid a blunder similar to Luis Diaz's disallowed goal at Tottenham in the future. Diaz's clearly-onside effort in north London was chalked off due to a VAR blunder . Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp called for a replay while his club questioned the "sporting integrity" of the 2-1 defeat due to the mishap. PGMOL said the failure to award the goal was down to "significant human error" and the released audio confirmed an embarrassing communication breakdown between on-field referee Simon Hooper, VAR Darren England and AVAR Dan Cook. The game was goalless at the time of Diaz's goal. Curtis Jones had earlier been sent off before Son Heung-min and Cody Gakpo struck before half-time. Diogo Jota was then dismissed for two bookable offences in the second half as Joel Matip scored an own goal to seal the win for Spurs. Webb spoke about incident on Match Official...
