The newest defendant to be charged as part of the classified documents case brought by special counsel Jack Smith against former President Donald Trump is scheduled to appear in court this morning, marking the latest development in the high-profile case that is set to go to trial next May. Carlos De Oliveira, a property manager at Trump's Mar-a-Lago estate, was newly charged in the case last week in a superseding indictment returned by a grand jury in the Southern District of Florida, adding on to the prior indictment filed against Trump and his longtime aide Walt Nauta in June. The judge overseeing former President Trump's classified documents case appeared skeptical Tuesday of his lawyers' arguments for an indefinite delay to the trial. The judge overseeing former President Donald Trump's classified documents case did not rule from the bench during Tuesday's pretrial hearing, but appeared skeptical of Trump's lawyers' arguments that he couldn't get a fair trial while running for president. U.S. Judge Aileen Cannon said that she would make a "prompt ruling" following Tuesday's hearing. Attorneys for the former president told Judge Cannon they didn't believe she should schedule a trial date, but said if she does they would propose "mid-November or later of next year," according to Trump's lawyer Todd Blanche. The Massachusetts Air National Guardsman accused of posting classified information on an online chat group asked a federal judge to reconsider his pretrial detention. The Air National Guardsman accused of accessing classified information and posting it in an online forum filed a new motion in court on Monday, asking the judge in his case to treat him like former President Donald Trump and not require he remain in jail until trial. Attorneys for Jack Teixeira, are arguing in the new filing that federal prosecutors made a “reasoned decision not to seek pretrial detention in other espionage cases, including most recently for either former President Donald Trump or his personal aid, Waltine Nauta,” who are also charged under the Espionage Act. Teixeira has been held without bail since his April arrest.
