The most expensive aircraft in the world is the B-2 Spirit Stealth Bomber

Image
The B-2 Spirit is a heavy stealth bomber with flying wings. It is one of the most unique planes in the world. In fact, the B-2 is the only stealth bomber in use around the world. The B-2 is also the most expensive plane in the world, with a total c.o.s.t of $2.13 b.i.llion per plane.. Product of the Cold ധąɾ The Spirit was designed during the Cold ധąɾ’s climax, under the Carter administration’s “Advanced Technology Bomber” project, for the purpose of penetrating increasingly-sophisticated Soviet air defenses and striking high value targets. To bypass the sensitive and deadly Soviet air defenses, the B-2 was designed around stealth technology, allowing the bomber to penetrate contested airspace, undetected. The B-2, with its low observability, is capable of deploying both conventional and thermonuclear ωεɑρσռs. The program’s remarkable costs were palatable during the Cold ധąɾ, when the B-2 was first designed and ordered. Initially, 132 bombers were expected to be built...

The Tu-95LAL was the first nuclear-powered aircraft in Soviet Union

Image
During the Cold War, the Soviet Union had an experimental nuclear - powered aircraft program similar to the American Convair XB-36H Crusader. Without the need to refuel, a nuclear-powered aircraft will have a very wide range compared to conventional designs. XB-36H Crusader nuclear-powered test aircraft On August 12, 1955, the Council of Ministers of the USSR issued a directive to research nuclear-powered aircraft. The design departments of Andrei Tupolev, Vladimir Myasishchev became the main responsible unit, while ND Kuznetsov and AM Lyulka were appointed to develop the engine. They chose to focus on direct-cycle systems, testing ramjets, jet engines and even turboprop engines. Tupolev’s office knows the complexity of the task at hand, estimating that it will take two decades before a complete prototype is created. They think this type of aircraft may appear in the late 1970s or early 1980s. To gain experience, Tupolev suggested building a flight test platfor...

Landing of a large CH-53 helicopter on an Airbus Beluga freight aircraft

A German Luftwaffe CH-53 heavy helicopter was successfully loaded into the A300-600ST Beluga cargo plane during tests performed at Airbus’ Manching site Airbus Defence and Space has developed and tested a loading system to lift outsized Military cargo into the Airbus Beluga A300-600ST aircraft . The capability was successfully tested during a verification exercise with the German armed forces, the system’s first customer, by loading a CH53 Military medium-lift helicopter into the Beluga. “The demand for outsized air cargo capability is on the rise. Capacity is scarce and, in light of current geopolitical developments, many customers are looking for new, fast and efficient solutions. This is exactly what we offer with our BelugaST fleet,” said Michael Schoellhorn, CEO of Airbus Defence and Space. “Our teams have been working on a remarkable solution to facilitate a speedy, efficient and autonomous handling to load heavy Military cargo onto the aircraft . Speed, agili...

The MV-22B Osprey is a V/STOL tiltrotor designed to replace the medium lift for the CH-46E Sea Knight attack support helicopter. The Osprey can operate as a helicopter or propeller plane and offers twice the speed , six times the range and three times the payload of the CH-46E. The Initial Operational Capability (IOC) for the MV-22B was announced in June 2007. Osprey had three successful combat deployments in Iraq between October 2007 and April 2009 with the VMM-263 , VMM-162 and VMM-266 respectively. VMM-263 began its first MV-22 deployment with the Bataan Readiness Group in May 2009 as part of the 22nd Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU). And will continue to be deployed next year. On March 28, 2008, NAVAIR awarded a five-year, $10.3 billion contract to Bell-Boeing to purchase 141 MV-22 Ospreys for the Marines and 26 CV-22 Ospreys for the Department of Defense Air Force Special Operations Command. This is the first multi-year procurement contract for the Osprey progra...
